Biography

Betsy Roettger is a Lecturer at the University of Virginia School of Architecture and teaches both graduate and undergraduate design studios and seminar courses in the Departments of Architecture and Urban and Environmental Planning. In addition to her work with students, Roettger’s research interests lie in the connection between design, community development, and political action.

Previously, she served as the Assistant Dean of Students, Career Development, a role in which she worked with students across the disciplines to support career development, student organizations, and coordinating school events.

Roettger recently finished serving (2) 3-year terms as a Commissioner on the Charlottesville Housing and Redevelopment Authority working to strengthen the future of public and affordable housing in the City of Charlottesville.  Betsy was awarded the ACSA / AIA Housing Design Education Award at the ACSA annual meeting in March, 2010 for her studios’ work on a project in Charlottesville, “SRO: a case for affordable dense housing”.

Betsy earned both her Bachelor Science and Master of Architecture from UVA.  She worked professionally and taught at the BAC (Boston Architectural College) in Boston, MA before returning to Charlottesville, VA in 2004.
