Join the mythical entourage of two giant creatures roaming and bringing joy to Grounds!

Designed, built, and engineered by The Art of the Moving Creature class co-taught by Melissa Goldman (School of Architecture) and Annie Temmink (Drama), the beasts will come to life in a parade through central Grounds. The Festival begins at the UVA Betsy and John Casteen Arts Grounds adjacent to Culbreth Road with a parade loop to the Rotunda around sunset. The community is invited to join in the festivities as part of the parade with costumes or puppets or just come as you are!

The Creatures first came to Grounds in 2013, and new designs return this year to honor the festival’s namesakes Stan Winston, Hollywood special effects legend and UVA alum, and late UVA Drama Assistant Professor Steven Warner, a co-founder of the original festival and longtime teacher of the Creature class.

The SW2 Festival of the Moving Creature is made possible through the generous support of UVA Arts, the Stan Winston School of Character Arts, the UVA Department of Drama, and the UVA School of Architecture.
