The 2024 Howland Symposium engages with the scale of the particulate—from dust, smoke, sand, gravel, or similarly mobile units of matter—and asks what new publics, and public obligations become legible when the design fields consider the material world through this lens. In a series of situated engagements with a variety of particulate matter, the symposium panelists will share recent research on the political, environmental, and human implications of mobile matter, and explore with us the ways in which the design fields might more deeply engage with this often-unruly category of materials.

PANELISTS

Danika Cooper is an Associate Professor of Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning at the University of California, Berkeley, where the core of her research centers on the geopolitics of scarcity, alternative water ontologies, and designs for resiliency in the global aridlands. Through her scholarship, Cooper traces the ways that nineteenth-century, Euro-Western environmental theories and ideologies continue to influence cultural perceptions, policy frameworks, and management practices within US desert landscapes today. Cooper's research and creative output has been published and exhibited across the world, and she has practiced architecture and landscape architecture in the United States and India.

Jane Mah Hutton is a landscape architect, and researcher, teaching at the University of Waterloo School of Architecture. Her work focuses on the act of building — examining the movement of materials as they pass from production landscapes (plantations, quarries) through designed constructions (buildings, landscapes) through demolition or re-use. Recent books include Reciprocal Landscapes: Stories of Material Movements, Landscript 5: Material Culture-Assembling and Disassembling Landscapes, and Wood Urbanism: From the Molecular to the Territorial, co-edited with Daniel Ibanez and Kiel Moe. She is currently working on a project that traces the material diaspora of Southern Ontario and a film that explores a family archive of an Eurasian overland journey in the 1970s.

Ozayr Saloojee is an Associate Professor of Architecture at Carleton University in Ottawa, where he is also cross-appointed at the Institute for African Studies and is affiliate faculty at Carleton’s Center for the Study of Islam. He currently serves as Associate Editor of Design for the Journal of Architectural Education (JAE) and is a member of Dark Matter University. His teaching, research and creative practice link architecture, politically contested terrains, design justice and geo-imaginaries, as well as questions of tradition and modernity in Islamic Art and Architecture.

ORGANIZER/MODERATOR

Erin Putalik is Assistant Professor of Architecture and Landscape Architecture at the University of Virginia School of Architecture. Erin’s current research examines three themes: 1) Forests + trees, resource limits, and environmental imaginaries 2) Toxicity, risk, and material obsolescence, and 3) Coastal resilience and historically informed coastal design. Across all three areas, her work investigates recent shifts in material, cultural and environmental history, while also engaging the intersections of history/theory research and design practice.
