Justice Madden
Biography
Justice Madden is the Project Manager at the Center for Cultural Landscapes (CCL) at the University of Virginia’s School of Architecture. She brings her expertise in storytelling, community facilitation, and land-based traditions to CCL programs, supporting initiatives that foster dialogue around cultural landscapes and marginalized communities.
Justice plays a central role in the Mellon Foundation-funded Out(sider) Preservation Initiative, working alongside Dr. Andrea Roberts to expand efforts that preserve and regenerate historic Black settlements across Texas, Louisiana, Virginia, Maryland, Washington D.C., North Carolina, California, and Canada. She also led the Heirloom Gardens Oral History Project, supervising a team to collect and archive stories at the Atlanta University Center Robert W. Woodruff Library.
In her work, Justice channels her passion for advancing narratives that foster healing and build community capacity. With a background in qualitative research, ethnographic methods, and cultural preservation, she remains committed to preserving traditions and empowering descendant communities. Justice’s mission is to prevent the erasure of cultural properties, support the resilience of Black agrarian traditions, and deepen connections to the land.
