Book Awards, Grants, and Prizes
The John Brinkerhoff (J.B.) Jackson Prize and the David Coffin Publication Grant seek to support and acknowledge exemplary scholarship in a recent publication as well as a publication-in-progress. The David R. Coffin Publication Grant is named in honor of the professor of architecture at Princeton University who was the pioneer scholar of landscape and garden history. The J. B. Jackson prize is named in honor of the pioneer of vernacular cultural landscape studies who taught at Berkeley and Harvard. These awards were bestowed by Elizabeth Barlow Rogers’ Foundation for Landscape Studies (FLS) from 2007- 2020. Rogers closed the FLS in 2021 and passed on several FLS legacy projects, including the book grants and prizes, to the UVA Center for Cultural Landscapes’ Elizabeth Barlow Rogers/Landscape Studies Initiative. Three of the former FLS Board members, each a respected garden and landscape historian, served on the book awards jury during the 2021-2022 review process to assure continuity during the transition of this important program. In 2022, Elizabeth Meyer, Merrill D. Peterson Professor of Landscape Architecture and founding director of the UVA Center for Cultural Landscapes, will join the awards committee as Chair. Professor Emeritus Reuben Rainey is stepping down from the book awards jury this year. Jane Wolff, a former David Coffin Book Award winner, joins the committee for a three-year term.
